Potato Cultivation in Egypt

🌱 Growing Seasons:

Egypt grows potatoes in three distinct seasons, making it one of the most important potato-producing countries in the region.

  • Summer Season:

    • Planting Time: December to mid-January

    • Harvest: April to May

    • Mostly for local consumption

  • Nili (Fall) Season:

    • Planting Time: August to early September

    • Harvest: November to December

    • Requires storage of seed potatoes from the previous harvest

  • Winter (Export) Season:

    • Planting Time: Mid-January to February

    • Harvest: May to June

    • Mainly for export purposes (especially to the EU and Gulf countries)

🌾 Soil Requirements:

  • Well-drained sandy loam or loamy soil

  • Rich in organic matter

  • pH between 5.5 and 6.5

  • Avoid saline or compacted soils

💧 Irrigation:

  • Regular and even watering is critical

  • Avoid over-irrigation to prevent rot and fungal diseases

🛡️ Pest & Disease Management:

  • Monitor for late blight, early blight, and aphids

  • Use certified seed potatoes to reduce the risk of disease transmission

📦 Storage:

  • Store in cool, dark, and well-ventilated areas

  • Ideal temperature: 4–10°C for table potatoes
